Hubble Space Telescope

Telescopul spaţial Hubble (prescurtat HST, de la numele lui în engleză Hubble Space Telescope) este un telescop plasat pe orbită în jurul Pământului, numit aşa după astronomul Edwin Hubble. Este poziţionat în afara atmosferei terestre, ceea ce îi conferă un avantaj semnificativ faţă de telescoapele de pe Pământ, imaginile nefiind perturbate de către turbulenţele atmosferice, iar telescopul putând capta informaţii şi în spectrul ultraviolet, ale cărui lungimi de undă sunt în mod normal puternic atenuate de către stratul de ozon al Pământului. De la lansarea lui în 1990 a devenit unul dintre cele mai importante instrumente din istoria astronomiei. Cu el astronomii au făcut numeroase observaţii, care au dus la importante descoperiri în astrofizică. Camera fotografică cu câmp foarte larg de pe Hubble furnizează cele mai detaliate imagini în lumină vizibilă realizate vreodată.

De la conceperea lui în 1946 şi până la lansare, proiectul construirii unui telescop spaţial a fost întârziat repetat de probleme tehnice şi de buget. În plus, imediat după lansarea din 1990 s-a descoperit că oglinda lui principală suferea de o aberaţie de sfericitate, aberaţie care compromitea grav capacităţile telescopului. Totuşi, după o misiune de întreţinere din 1993, telescopul a atins calităţile preconizate în proiect, devenind un instrument vital atât pentru astronomie, cât şi pentru publicul larg. Telescopul spaţial Hubble face parte din programul NASA Great Observatories (în română Mari Observatoare Spaţiale), alături de Observatorul Compton pentru raze Gamma, Observatorul Chandra pentru raze X şi Telescopul spaţial Spitzer[1]. Hubble este rezultatul unei colaborări între NASA şi Agenţia Spaţială Europeană (ESA).
